"The urge to draw must be quite deep within us, because children love to do it." - David Hockney

Drawing

  • Practice observing. The more you look at something, the more you learn about it.
  • Don’t aim for perfection.
  • Take time to doodle.
  • Start with stick figures.
  • Play around with light and dark.
  • Vary your line quality.
  • Choose the right medium.
  • Keep a sketchbook.

Painting Portraits

  • Start with an outline
  • Practice eyes repeatedly
  • Work from dark to mid to light tones
  • Learn how to paint hair with texture
  • Choose the right colors for effective flesh tones
  • Spend more time finding a good reference image

Seascapes in Studio

These paintings come to light after a long walk on Ardmore and Clonea beaches.

Another favourite spot I go to is Whiting Bay, the beaches are so clean and the water can look so inviting, BUT Freezing!! I'll wait for the summer for that!!

I love to paint with blue paint, I love exploring different skies using different mediums and textures.. putting paint down then removing it...

I get lost in this type of work, hours slip away fast in my Studio.

Commissions

Thankfully I am surrounded by amazing landmarks like the Lismore Castle and the Dromana Bridge, which mean so much to so many people.

I frequently find myself emersed in painting these images from photos or onsite. I love the change of pace these give me.

Oil Painting Tips

Scumbling – This is a dry-brush technique that involves gently dragging your brush over the canvas to produce a broken colour effect.
Thin washes with solvent – By mixing oil paint with solvent, you can produce a very thin wash of transparent color which dries fast. This is how I usually start my paintings.
Multi-colored brush strokes – If you leave various colors unmixed on your brush, you can create these beautiful multi-colored streaks.
