Inspired by the distinctive Gothic gate lodge and towers at Ballysaggartmore, just outside Lismore, County Waterford.
With its castellated towers, warm stonework and dramatic entrance, this beautiful piece captures something of the fairytale character of one of Waterford's most intriguing historic landmarks. Built in the mid-1800s, the ambitious Ballysaggartmore estate was never completed as planned, leaving behind the atmospheric towers, bridge and gate lodge that remain today. 

The original is painted in expressive watercolour, I have focused on the character of the architecture rather than creating a strictly detailed architectural study. Loose washes, strong ink-like marks and warm ochre tones bring the stone and surrounding landscape to life, while the softer blue of the sky gives the piece an unmistakably Irish sense of place.
