A watercolour study of one of Cappoquin’s much-loved riverside views.
Painted in my loose, expressive watercolour style, The Rock captures the character of the River Blackwater and the landscape surrounding Cappoquin.
I wanted to bring out the changing light, textures and natural movement of the river rather than create a highly detailed representation — allowing the washes, marks and layers of colour to tell the story.
The Rock is a familiar part of Cappoquin’s riverside landscape and has long been connected with the life of the river, from rowing and fishing to community gatherings.
For me, this piece is about place, memory and the quiet beauty of the Blackwater — a little piece of Waterford captured in paint.
